Rotangulars

What are Rotangulars?

Rotangulars are new form of computer-generated artwork which I created. Here are a few examples:

Rotangular #92 Rotangular #124 Rotangular #186 Rotangular #44 Rotangular #140

Each one has it's own number, from 40 to 300, which correspond to the geometric angles inside. Each one is unique, but Rotangulars similar in number have a similar style.

How are they made?

The geometry behind these Rotangulars is very simple. If the number of the Rotangular is called x, the line starts in the center, travels 1 pixel, turns x degrees towards the center, goes 2 pixels, turns x degrees, goes 3 pixels and so on. Each line also changes color, slowly cycling through the rainbow.

Since the line turns x° from the previous angle, the interior angles are 180°-x. In Rotangular 92, this means each interior angle is 88°.

Since the numbers represent degrees, you might think they should go from 0 to 360, not 40 to 300. That logic is correct, but I discovered that everything outside that range is less interesting.

The images you see here were rendered by a Python script and then scaled using ImageMagick. The script renders the images using PyCairo.
